More on sadness

March 1, 2010

A couple of days ago I wrote a little bit about sadness. Here’s a little update on this topic . . .

“The problem, though, is that as a society, we’ve come to see depression as something that must always be avoided or medicated away. We’ve been so eager to remove the stigma from depression that we’ve ended up stigmatizing sadness.”

The above is a quote from an article in the most recent Times Magazine, which I think is interesting. The article is great and raises some important tough issues about mental illness. Do we romanticize it? Do we over treat it? The smartest part of the overall message may be that we have this term, “depression,” which is a catchall for so many different kinds of sadness–some very normative and some very destructive. I will say that I do not fully endorse this evolutionary model–it seems to be trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

Ok, onto to happier topics. . .
